Wandsworth Museums Collections
There are just over 25,000 items in the Wandsworth Museum collections. Most of these are part of the original Wandsworth Borough Museum’s collections and were collected over a period of 100+ years through the various incarnations of local museums in the region. Museum staff have been able to trace some of the items in the collection back to the original Battersea Museum founded in 1906. Over the past several year new artefacts and objects have been added to the collection through donations from individuals and families wishing to share their own heritage with us. The museum is always happy to receive donations relevant to local history in the region.
Collections fall into two categories: those which are relevant directly to the history of the region and those which are representative of the lives led by people who have lived in Wandsworth region.
The 500M2 collections storage space at the museum is environmentally controlled to preserve the objects in a stable environment. In addition to its works on paper and canvas and other cultural objects the museum also houses an historic archive of images and documentation. This collection is currently being catalogued and organised so that it can be made available to the public and researchers later in 2011.
