GREAT WARD POETRY

A talk by local historian & writer Simon McNeill-Ritchie

16 October 2014

Entrance: 7pm for a 7.30pm start

Ticket Price: £7.00

Venue: Wandsworth Museum, 38 West Hill, Wandsworth, SW18 1RX

At the outbreak of war in August 1914, the Royal Victoria Patriotic School on Wandsworth Common was commandeered by the Territorial Army and converted into one of the four ‘Great’ war hospitals in London. Over 52,000 men were treated there until it closed in 1919.
In 1915, the patients and staff were given permission to publish The Gazette, a monthly journal of articles, sketches and poems, to raise funds for the soldiers’ ‘Comforts’. Simon, a former British diplomat and local resident, has compiled a collection of some 40 of the poems and added brief notes on the repatriation of the wounded from the Front. He will be donating 50% of the proceeds to SSAFA, the military charity supporting service personnel and their families.

We look forward to seeing you at the Museum!

Museum Relocation Announcement

Museum Relocation Announcement

Wandsworth Museum to Move to new Premises

dscf8955Wandsworth Museum is intending to move later this year to new premises, in order to improve the Museum’s accessibility to visitors and maximise its funding to best serve the community. As a result, the Museum closed to the public temporarily from 28 June, and will reopen as soon as possible after the move is complete. The Museum’s flagship programme of formal learning workshops for schools will continue in the current location on west Hill until December 2014.

The Museum’s Trustees are in talks with local organisations about the relocation and further details will be released in due course. The Museum Trustees believe that premises closer to one of the borough’s many busy shopping areas and transport hubs would now make a better location for continuing to further raise visitor numbers, as well as providing the basis for development of enhanced Museum services in the future. Wandsworth Council (which owns the Museum’s collection) and the Friends of Wandsworth Museum Committee are supportive of the relocation.
